天主十誡 The Ten Commandments:

  1. 問: 要救靈魂,單信天主的道理,就夠了麼?

    Q: In order to save one's soul, is it enough merely to believe God's doctrines?

    答: 不夠,還該全守天主的誡命。 (雅 2:14;瑪 19:16-17)

    A: No; we must also keep His commandments. (Jas 2:14; Mt 19:16-17)

    一、 欽崇一天主在萬有之上。

    A: There are Ten Commandments:

    1. I am the Lord thy God, thou shall not have strange gods before me;
    2. Thou shalt not take the name of thy Lord thy God in vain;
    3. Remember thou keep holy the Sabbath day;
    4. Honour thy father and thy mother;
    5. Thou shalt not kill;
    6. Thou shalt not commit adultery;
    7. Thou shalt not steal;
    8. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour;
    9. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife;
    10. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's goods. (Ex 20:1-17; Mt 5:17-19)

(I am the Lord thy God, thou shalt not have strange gods before me):

  1. 問: 第一誡命是什麼?

    Q: What are we commanded by the first commandment?

    答: 命人恭敬獨一真天主,在萬有之上。 (路 4:8)

    A: By the first commandment we are commanded to worship the One True God above all things. (Lk 4:8)

    Q: How should we adore God?

    答: 該心裡欽崇,外面欽崇,也用公禮欽崇。

    A: We should adore God interiorly in our own hearts, exteriorly in our conduct, and public worship.

  7. 問: 什麼罪違反望天主?

恭敬聖母聖人 Honouring the Blessed Virgin and Saints:

  1. 問: 恭敬聖母、天使、聖人,也是理當的麼?

    Q: Is it lawful to honour the Blessed Virgin, the angels and the saints?

    答: 也是理當的。 (出 23: 20-21;路 1:48-49;德 44:1)

    A: It is quite lawful to honour the Blessed Virgin, the angels and the saints. (Ex 23:20-21; Lk 1:48-49; Sir 44:1)

  2. 問: 為什麼該當格外恭敬聖母?

    Q: Why should we pay special honour to the Blessed Virgin?

    答: 因為聖母是天主的母親,也是我們的母親。 (路 1:30-35;若 19:26-27)

    A: We should pay special honour to the Blessed Virgin because she is the Mother of God and our Mother. (Lk 1:30-35; Jn 19:26-27)

  3. 問: 為什麼該當恭敬天使、聖人呢?

    Q: Why should we honour the angels and the saints?

    A: We should honour the angels and the saints because they are faithful servants and beloved children of God, who are always interceding for us with God. (2Mac 15:13-16)

  4. 問: 我們也當尊敬聖像麼?

    Q: Should we also honour crucifixes, statues and other holy images?

    答: 也當尊敬,因為尊敬聖像,就是恭敬聖像所表現的神聖,又能提醒人熱心。

    A: We should honour crucifixes statues and other holy images, because by honouring them we honour those whom they represent, and besides, they help to increase our fervour.

  5. 問: 我們恭敬天使聖人,同外教人敬邪神,拜偶像,有分別麼?

    Q: Is there any difference between the honour which we pay to the angels and saints, and the honour which pagans pay to idols and false gods?

    答: 大有分別:恭敬天使聖人,合於正理,引人歸向天主。敬邪神,拜偶像,出於迷信, 引人背叛天主。

    A: There is a great difference: the honour which we pay to the angels and saints is reasonable, leading us to God; but the worship paid to idols and false gods is superstitious, and leads men away from God.

第二誡(毋呼天主聖名以發虛誓) The Second Commandment
(Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain):

  1. 問: 第二誡禁止什麼?

    Q: What does the second commandment forbid?

    答: 禁止輕慢天主的聖名,或呼天主的聖名發虛誓,或許願不還。 (肋 19: 12;申 23:22-24)

    A: The second commandment forbids profaning the Holy Name of God, calling God to witness a false oath, and breaking vows. (Lev 19:12; Dt 23:22-24)

  2. 問: 什麼是發誓?

    Q: What is an oath?

    答: 就是呼天主聖名,證自己所言為真,所許必踐。 (耶 4:2;瑪 5:33)

    A: An oath is calling God to witness that what we affirm is true, or that we will do what we have promised. (Jer 4:2; Mt 5:33)

  3. 問: 什麼是發願?

    Q: What is a vow?

    答: 就是許給天主一件更中悅祂聖意的事,且規定不做有罪。 (訓 5:3-4)

    A: A vow is a promise made to God about something very pleasing to Him, which binds us under pain of sin. (Ecl 5:3-4)

  4. 問: 若要發願,先該做什麼?

    Q: Before taking a vow, what should we do first?

    答: 該細心審量,不可冒失,先聽神父的指引更妥。

    A: We should weigh the matter carefully, and not act rashly. It would be well to ask advice of a priest.

  5. 問: 第二誡命什麼?

    Q: What are we commanded by the second commandment?

    答: 命人尊敬、讚美天主的聖名。 (詠 112:2-3)

    A: By the second commandment, we are commanded to honour and praise God's Holy Name. (Ps 112:2-3)

第三誡(守瞻禮之日)The Third Commandment
(Remember thou keep holy the Sabbath day):

  1. 問: 第三條誡命什麼?

    Q: What are we commanded by the third commandment?

    答: 命人主日及當守節日上停工,專務恭敬天主的事情。 (申 5:12-14)

    A: By the third commandment we are commanded to abstain from servile work on all Sundays and holydays of obligation and devoted ourselves to the worship of God. (Dt 5:12-14)

  2. 問: 為什麼必須守主日及停工的節日呢?

    Q: Why should we keep holy all Sundays and holydays of obligation?

    答: 因為我們平日多為照顧肉身,到主日或當守瞻禮,自當格外恭敬天主,照顧靈魂。 (詳見聖教第一規) (出 20:8-10)

    A: Because on ordinary days we are mostly occupied with caring for our bodies, hence on Sundays and holydays we should in a special manner worship God and care for our souls. (Ex 20:8-10)

第四誡(孝敬父母) The Fourth Commandment
(Honour thy father and thy mother):

  1. 問: 第四誡命什麼?

    Q: What is commanded by the fourth commandment?

    答: 命兒女尊敬父母,孝愛父母,聽父母的正命。(德 3:3-17;弗 6:1-3)

    A: The fourth commandment commands all children to respect and love their parents, and to obey their just commands. (Sir 3:3-17; Eph 6:1-3)

  2. 問: 父母死了,兒女有什麼責任?

    Q: What is the duty of children when their parents die?

    答: 該按聖教會的禮規殯葬父母,為父母唸經,獻彌撒,求天主賞他們早升天堂。

    A: They should bury their parents according to the rites of the Catholic Church, and should pray and offer Masses for them, beseeching God to let them speedily enter Heaven.

  3. 問: 忤逆不孝的兒女受什麼罰?

    Q: What will be the punishment of very wicked and rebellious children?

    答: 生前或遭患難,死後要下地獄。 (德 3:18)

    A: They should have sorrows in life, and shall go to Hell when they die. (Sir 3:18)

  4. 問: 第四誡僅指兒女的責任麼?

    Q: Does the fourth commandment deal only with the duties of children?

    答: 不僅指兒女的責任,也包含父母兒女、夫婦、長上屬下、主人傭工,彼此相關的責任。 (弗 6:4-9)

    A: The fourth commandment does not only deal with the duties of children, but includes also the duties towards each other of parents and children, husband and wife, and superiors and inferiors; masters and servants. (Eph 6:4-9)

  5. 問: 若父母長上的命,不合天主的命,也該聽麼?

    Q: If the commands of parents or superiors are not in accordance with God's law, ought we to obey them?

    答: 不該聽:因為不該為人的命,違背天主的命。 (瑪 10:37)

    A: We ought not to obey them, because we should not disobey God in order to obey men. (Mt 10:37)

  6. 問: 我們對於國家有該盡的本分麼?

    Q: Have we any duty towards our country?

    答: 有:就是當愛護國家,服從合理的法律,勉盡法定的義務。 (羅 13:1-7)

    A: Yes, we should love and defend our country, obey its just laws and do our utmost to discharge our lawful obligations. (Rom 13:1-7)

  7. 問: 父母對於兒女有什麼責任?

    Q: What is the duty of parents towards their children?

    答: 有愛護、教養兒女的責任,其中最大的,是教他們恭敬天主。 (德 7:25-26;弗 6:4)

    A: They should love, nourish and educate their children and, above all, teach them to worship God. (Sir 7:25-26; Eph 6:4)

第五誡(毋殺人) The Fifth Commandment (Thou shalt not kill):

  1. 問: 第五誡禁止什麼?

    Q: What does the fifth commandment forbid?

    答: 禁止殺害損害自己,或別人的靈魂肉身,並相幫人做這類的事。 (瑪 5:21-24)

    A: The fifth commandment forbids us to kill or injure ourselves or others in soul or body. It also forbids us to help others to do such things. (Mt 5:21-24)

  2. 問: 什麼是害自己的肉身呢?

    Q: What does "injuring one's own body" mean?

    答: 尋死、酗酒,吸麻醉毒品,及做別的各種傷身的事。

    A: Injuring one's own body means seeking death, getting drunk, smoking opium or doing anything else hurtful to the body.

  3. 問: 怎麼是害別人的靈魂呢?

    Q: What does "harming the souls of others" mean?

    答: 立惡表,引人犯罪。 (瑪 18:6-7)

    A: Harming the souls of others means giving bad example and leading others to commit sin. (Mt 18:6-7)

  4. 問: 第五誡命是什麼?

    Q: What are we commanded by the fifth commandment?

    答: 命人彼此和睦,彼此相幫。 (若 13:34)

    A: By the fifth commandment we are commanded to live in peace and to help one another. (Jn 13:34)

第六誡(毋行邪淫) The Sixth Commandment
(Thou shalt not commit adultery):

  1. 問: 第六誡禁止什麼?

    Q: What does the sixth commandment forbid?

    答: 禁止一切違反潔德的言行,又禁止投入邪淫的機會。 (出 20:14;得前 4:3-5)

    A: The sixth commandment forbids all words and actions contrary to the virtue of purity; it also forbids putting oneself in the occasion of committing such sins. (Ex 20:14; 1Thes 4:3-5)

  2. 問: 第六誡禁止的事情,常是大罪麼?

    Q: Are those things which are forbidden by the sixth commandment always mortal sins?

    答: 邪淫的事,明知故犯,常是大罪。 (弗 5:3-7)

    A: It is always a mortal sin to do anything knowingly and willfully against the virtue of purity. (Eph 5:3-7)

  3. 問: 第六誡命是什麼?

    Q: What are we commanded by the sixth commandment?

    答: 命人保守潔德。 (格前 6:18-20)

    A: By the sixth commandment we are commanded to keep ourselves chaste and pure. (1Cor 6:18-20)

    A: To keep ourselves chaste and pure we must: avoid all occasions of committing sin; avoid bad company; go frequently to Confession and Holy Communion, and have special devotion to the Blessed Virgin. (Mt 5:29-30; Mk 14:38; 1P 5:8-9)

第七誡(毋偷盜) The Seventh Commandment
(Thou shalt not steal):

  1. 問: 第七誡禁止什麼?

    Q: What does the seventh commandment forbid?

    答: 禁止損害人的財物。 (出 20:15)

    A: The seventh commandment forbids injuring others in their property. (Ex 20:15)

  2. 問: 怎麼算是損害人的財物?

    Q: In what way can we injure others in their property?

    答: 一、取財不義;二、存留不義之財;三、損壞人的財物。 (肋 19:35-36)

    A: We can injure others in their property in three ways: (1) by taking unjustly what belongs to them; (2) by keeping unjustly what belongs to them; and (3) by destroying unjustly what belongs to them. (Lev 19:35-36)

  3. 問: 犯了第七誡,該怎麼樣?

    Q: If we have broken the seventh commandment, what must we do?

    答: 該照自己的力量補還;不然,天主不赦罪。 (出 22:2-5)

    A: If we have broken the seventh commandment we must make restitution as far as lies in our power; otherwise God will not forgive us. (Ex 22:2-5)

  4. 問: 第七誡命什麼?

    A: By the seventh commandment we are commanded to be just, charitable and generous and to pay our debts quickly and in full. (Pro 16:8; Rom 13:7)

第八誡(毋妄證) The Eighth Commandment
(Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour):

  1. 問: 第八誡禁止什麼?

    Q: What does the eighth commandment forbid?

    答: 禁止說謊、妄證、冤枉人、破壞別人的名譽。 (出 23:1-2;出 23:7)

    A: The eighth commandment forbids telling lies bearing false witness , calumny, and injuring the reputation of others. (Ex 23:1-2; Ex 23:7)

  2. 問: 什麼是說謊?

    Q: What is a lie?

    答: 就是說心口不合的說話,有意欺哄人。

    A: A lie is saying something which we believe to be false, with the intention of deceiving others.

  3. 問: 什麼是妄證?

    Q: What does "bearing false witness" mean?

    答: 就是說假見證,或是妄告人。

    A: Bearing false witness means giving false evidence before superiors, or accusing others falsely.

  4. 問: 什麼是冤枉人?

    Q: What is calumny?

    答: 就是憑空捏造別人的過失。

    A: Calumny means telling false things about others.

  5. 問: 什麼是破壞別人的名譽?

    Q: What does "injuring the reputation of others" mean?

    答: 就是沒有正當的緣故,洩漏別人的罪過。

    A: Injuring the reputation of others means making known the faults of others without sufficient cause.

  6. 問: 犯了這些罪也該賠補麼?

    Q: Must we also make reparation after committing these sins?

    答: 該盡力賠補。

    A: After committing these sins, we must make reparation as far as we are able.

  7. 問: 第八誡命什麼?

    Q: What are we commanded by the eighth commandment?

    答: 命人誠實,是說是,非說非,謹口慎言,保護別人的名譽。 (瑪 5:37)

    A: By the eighth commandment, we are commanded to be upright and sincere, saying yes or no according to the truth; to be careful in speech, and to protect the reputations of our neighbour. (Mt 5:37)

第九誡(毋願他人妻) The Ninth Commandment
(Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife):

  1. 問: 第九誡禁止什麼?

    Q: What does the ninth commandment forbid?

    答: 禁止人喜歡不潔淨的思想,或願意犯不潔淨的罪。 (瑪 5:28)

    A: The ninth commandment forbids us to take pleasure in impure thoughts, or willfully desire to commit sins of impurity. (Mt 5:28)

  2. 問: 心裡一起邪念,就有罪麼?

    Q: If an impure thought comes into our minds, do we then commit a sin?

    答: 若故意喜歡,就有罪;若勉力壓服了,不但沒有罪,還有退誘感的功勞。

    A: If we take willful pleasure in a sinful thought, we do commit sin; but if we do our best to suppress it, we not only do not commit sin, but we gain merit by resisting temptation.

  3. 問: 第九誡命什麼?

    Q: What are we commanded by the ninth commandment?

    答: 命我們保存靈魂的潔淨,不想邪念。 (瑪 5:8;伯前 2:11)

    A: By the ninth commandment we are commanded to preserve the purity of our souls, and not to admit unchaste thoughts. (Mt 5:8; 1P 2:11)

第十誡(毋貪他人財物) The Tenth Commandment
(Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's goods):

  1. 問: 第十誡禁止什麼?

    Q: What does the tenth commandment forbid?

    答: 禁止妄貪別人的財物。 (弟前 6:10)

    A: The tenth commandment forbids all covetous and unjust desires of our neighbour's goods. (1Tim 6:10)

  2. 問: 第十誡命什麼?

    Q: What are we commanded by the tenth commandment?

    答: 命人知足,不貪分外之財。 (路 12:15)

    A: By the tenth commandment we are commanded to be content and not to covet things which are not ours. (Lk 12:15)

十誡總綱 The Great Commandment:

  1. 問: 什麼是十誡的總綱?

    Q: What is the Great Commandment?

    答: 就是全心、全靈、全意、全力,愛天主在萬有之上,又為天主愛人如己。 (瑪 22:35-40)

    A: The Great Commandment is to love God with our whole heart, and with our whole soul, and with all our mind, and with all our strength, and above all things; and to love our neighbour as ourselves for the love of God. (Mt 22:35-40)

  2. 問: 各人也當盡各人的本分麼?

    Q: Should every man do his duty well?

    答: 各人對於本人地位的職務,都該勤謹盡到。

    A: Every man should fulfil diligently and carefully the duties of his state in life.

聖教會四規 The Four Precepts of the Church:

  1. 問: 十誡以外,還有當守的誡命麼?

    Q: Besides the Ten Commandments are there any other commandments to be kept?

    答: 還有聖教會的規律。

    A: Besides the Ten Commandments of God, there are the precepts of the Church.

  2. 問: 聖教會要緊的規律有幾條?

    Q: What are the chief precepts of the Church?

    答: 有四條:
    一、凡主日及一切停工的節日,該參與彌撒。
    二、遵守聖教會所定的大小齋期。
    三、該妥當修和,並善領聖體,至少每年一次。
    四、當盡力幫助聖教會的經費。

    A: The chief precepts of the Church are four:
    (1) to participate in Mass on all Sundays and holydays of obligation;
    (2) to fast and abstain on the days commanded by the Church;
    (3) to make a good Confession and to receive Holy Communion worthily at least once a year;
    (4) to contribute according to our means to the support of the Church.

第一規(凡主日及一切停工的節日,該參與彌撒)
The First Precept of the Church
(To participate in Mass on all Sundays and holydays of obligation):

  1. 問: 第一條規命什麼?

    Q: What are we commanded by the first precept of the Church?

    答: 命我們每主日當守節日,參與彌撒,停百工。 (瑪 12:1-12)

    A: By the first precept we are commanded to participate in Mass and to abstain from servile work on all Sundays and holydays of obligation. (Mt 12:1-12)

  2. 問: 主日及停工節日,不停工,有罪麼?

    Q: Is it sinful not to abstain from servile work on Sundays and holydays of obligation?

    答: 無故不停工,就有罪;若有正當的緣故,該求本堂神父寬免。

    A: It is sinful not to abstain from servile work without cause; but if we have a grave reason, we ought to ask for a dispensation from our parish priest.

  3. 問: 主日和當守的節日,不參與彌撒,有大罪沒有?

    Q: Is it a mortal sin not to participate in Mass on Sundays and holydays of obligation?

    答: 若沒有真實的緣故,缺彌撒,就有大罪。

    A: It is a mortal sin to miss Mass on Sundays and holydays of obligation without sufficient cause.

  4. 問: 教友們在主日和當守的節日,除了參與彌撒以外,還有什麼當行的善工?

    Q: Besides participating in Mass on Sundays and holydays of obligation have the faithful any other good works to perform on these days?

    答: 除了參與彌撒外,要勉勵做些慈善事,及熱心的神工,如參與聖體降福、聽道理、講解問答、學習經文等。

    A: Besides participating in Mass, on these days, the faithful should exert themselves to perform other works of charity or devotion, such as attending Benediction and instructions, teaching catechism and learning prayers.

第二規 (守聖教會所定的大小齋期)
The Second Precept of the Church
(To fast and abstain on the days commanded by the Church):

  1. 問: 第二規命什麼?

    Q: What are we commanded by the second precept of the Church?

    答: 命教友守聖教會所定的大小齋期。

    A: By the second precept of the Church, we are commanded to observe the days of fasting and abstinence prescribed by the Church.

  2. 問: 什麼是小齋?

    Q: What is abstinence?

    答: 就是不吃禽獸的肉,但不禁止吃水族的肉。

    A: Abstinence is a prohibition from eating flesh meat, but the use of fish is allowed.

  3. 問: 什麼是大齋?

    Q: What is fasting?

    答: 就是一天只許吃一頓飽飯,早晨晚晌,還可照本地的習慣,吃少許點心。

    A: Fasting means that we are allowed only one full meal in the day; but in the morning and evening we are allowed a slight refection, according to the custom of the place where we are living.

  4. 問: 什麼人該守小齋?

    Q: Who are obliged to abstain?

    答: 凡滿了十四歲的男女教友,都該守小齋。

    A: All Catholics above the age of fourteen years are obliged to abstain.

  5. 問: 什麼人該守大齋?

    Q: Who are obliged to fast?

    答: 凡滿了十四歲,未滿六十歲的男女教友,都該守大齋。

    A: All Catholics who are over fourteen and who have not yet reached their sixtieth year are bound to fast.

第三規(該妥當告解,並善領聖體,至少每年一次)
The Third Precept of the Church (To make a good Confession and to receive Holy Communion worthily at least once a year):

  1. 問: 第三規命什麼?

    Q: What does the third precept of the Church command?

    答: 命一切開了明悟的教友,每年至少妥當修和,並善領聖體一次。 (若 6:51-53)

    A: The third precept of the Church commands all Catholics who have come to the use of reason, to make a good Confession and to receive Holy Communion worthily at least once a year. (Jn 6:51-53)

  2. 問: 聖教會在第三規上,特加了「至少」二字,是為什麼?

    Q: Why does the Church add the words "at least" to this precept?

    答: 因為聖教會很盼望教友們,不但每年一次,且勤做修和、勤領聖體才好。

    A: The Church adds the words "at least" because she greatly hopes that the faithful will go to Confession and Holy Communion, not once only, but many times in the year.

第四規(盡力協助聖教會經費)
The Fourth Precept of the Church
(To contribute according to our means to the support of the Church):

  1. 問: 第四規上,聖教會命什麼?

    Q: What are we commanded by the fourth precept of the Church?

    答: 命信友遵照天主的命令,按各地的習慣,幫助聖教會一切的經費。 (瑪 10:10;路 10:7)

    A: By the fourth precept, we are commanded to contribute to the support of the Church, in accordance with the command of God and the rules of the district in which we live.

  2. 問: 聖教會為什麼定了這個規律?

    Q: Why has the Church given this precept?

    答: 因為聖教會為信友們操心勞力,施行聖事,管理靈魂,信友們理當供給一切用費。

    A: Since the Church labours and works for the faithful, administering the sacraments and caring for souls, it is but right that the faithful should contribute to support these expenses.

罪 Sin:

  1. 問: 什麼是罪?

    Q: What is sin?

    答: 就是明知故犯天主的誡命。

    A: Sin is any conscious and wilful offence against the law of God.

  2. 問: 罪分大小麼?

    Q: Are some sins more serious than others?

    答: 分大小。

    A: Yes, sins are divided into grievous sin and venial sins.

大罪 Mortal Sin:

  1. 問: 什麼是大罪?

    Q: What is a grievous sin?

    答: 在大事情上,明知故犯天主的誡命,就是大罪;大罪也叫死罪。

    A: A grievous sin is a grave offence, consciously and wilfully committed against the law of God in serious matter. It is also called a mortal sin.

  2. 問: 大罪為什麼也叫死罪?

    Q: Why are grievous sins are also called mortal sins?

    答: 因為大罪使人的靈魂離棄自己的終向,失落超性的生命,及所立的功勞,不能升天堂,應該下地獄。 (德 21:2-3)

    A: Grievous sins are called mortal (i.e. deadly) sin because they cause the soul to reject God, its last end; destroy its supernatural life and all its merits; prevent it from going to Heaven; and cause it to deserve Hell. (Sir 12:2-3)

小罪 Venial Sin:

  1. 問: 什麼是小罪?

    Q: What is a venial sin?

    答: 就是在小事情上,明知故犯天主的誡命,或在大事情上,不完全明白,或不完全故意犯天主的誡命。

    A: A venial sin is an offence against the law of God, consciously and wilfully committed, but in a matter which is not serious; or an offence in a serious matter, but without full knowledge or full consent.

  2. 問: 這等罪為什麼叫小罪?

    Q: Why are such sins called venial sins?

    答: 因為不使人離棄自己的終向,也不使人失落超性的生命,且在告解以外也能得赦。

    A: These sins are called venial sins because they do not separate the soul from its last end, nor destroy its supernatural life; also, they can be forgiven outside confession.

  3. 問: 犯小罪有什麼害處?

    Q: What are the evil effects of venial sins?

    答: 減少人的熱心,使人漸漸陷於大罪,又使人應受許多的暫罰。 (德 19:1;瑪 12:36)

    A: Venial sins lessen our fervour, lead us gradually to fall into mortal sin, and make us deserve much temporal punishment. (Sir 19:1; Mt 12:36)

七罪宗 The Seven Capital Sins:

  1. 問: 七罪宗是那七樣?

    Q: What are the seven capital sins?

    答: 就是驕傲、慳吝、迷色、忿怒、嫉妒、貪饕、懶惰。

    A: The seven capital sins are: pride, covetousness, lust, anger, envy, gluttony, sloth.

德行 The Virtues:

  1. 問: 除了躲避犯罪以外,還該做什麼?

    Q: What else should we do besides avoiding sin?

    答: 該勉勵修各樣的德行。

    A: Besides avoiding sin, we should strive to practise virtues.

  2. 問: 德行是什麼?

    Q: What is a virtue?

    答: 是行善避惡的恆久習慣。

    A: A virtue is a permanent habit, leading us to do good and to avoid evil.

  3. 問: 德行分幾樣?

    Q: How many kinds of virtues are there?

    答: 分兩樣:就是向天主之德,及行為之德。

    A: There are two kinds of virtues, theological virtues and moral virtues. Theological virtues are virtues which have God as their object. Moral virtues are virtues which regulate our conduct.

  4. 問: 什麼是向天主之德?

    Q: What are theological virtues?

    答: 就是信、望、愛三德。 (格前 13:13)

    A: The theological virtues are the three virtues of faith, hope and charity. (1Cor 13:13)

信望愛三德 Faith, Hope and Charity:

  1. 問: 信德是什麼?

    Q: What is faith?

    答: 是直向天主的超性之德,叫我們全信天主各端道理,因為天主不能差錯,也不能虛言。 (若 3:31-33;希 11:1-2)

    A: Faith is a supernatural theological virtue by which we believe all that God teaches, because God cannot err, and cannot deceive us. (Jn 3:31-33; Heb 11:1-2)

  2. 問: 望德是什麼?

    Q: What is hope?

    答: 是直向天主的超性之德,盼望天主的仁慈,因耶穌的功勞,在世上賞我們要緊的聖寵,死後賞我們永遠的真福。 (羅 8:24-25)

    A: Hope is a supernatural theological virtue, by which we trust in God's mercy, hoping through the merits of Jesus Christ, that He will give us here on earth all necessary graces, and after death everlasting happiness. (Rom 8:24-25)

  3. 問: 愛德是什麼?

    Q: What is charity?

    答: 是直向天主的超性之德,叫我們因天主無窮美善,愛天主在萬有之上,又為天主愛人如己。 (格前 13:1-7)

    A: Charity is a supernatural theological virtue, by which we love God above all things because He is infinitely good, and love our neighbour as ourselves for the love of God. (1Cor 13:1-7)

四樞德 The Four Cardinal Virtues:

  1. 問: 行為之德,有什麼總綱?

    Q: What are the most fundamental of the moral virtues?

    答: 有四樞德:就是智德、義德、勇德、節德。 (智 8:7)

    A: The most fundamental of the moral virtues are the four cardinal virtues, Prudence, Justice, Fortitude, Temperance. (Wis 8:7)

  2. 問: 這四德為什麼叫四樞德?

    Q: Why are they called cardinal virtues?

    答: 因為是諸德的樞紐,無論什麼德行,都是離不了這四德的。

    A: They are called cardinal virtues because they are as it were, the hinges on which all the other virtues turn. Without them there can be no virtue.

愛人的本分 The Duty of Loving One's Neighbour:

  1. 問: 我們各自修德,獨善其身,就夠了麼?

    Q: Is it sufficient for each of us to cultivate virtue for himself alone?

    答: 不夠,還該愛人如己,按自己的力量行哀矜。 (瑪 22:39;若一 3:17-18)

    A: It is not sufficient; we must also love our neighbour as ourselves and perform works of mercy according to our power. (Mt 22:39; 1Jn 3:17-18)

  2. 問: 哀矜有幾樣?

    Q: How many kinds of works of mercy are there?

    答: 有神哀矜、形哀矜兩樣。

    A: There are two kinds of works of mercy: spiritual and corporal.

  3. 問: 什麼是神哀矜?

    Q: What are the spiritual works of mercy?

    答: 就是解人疑惑,教導愚蒙,勸人回改,安慰憂苦,赦人侮辱,忍耐磨難,又為生者死者祈求。

    A: The spiritual works of mercy are: to give counsel to the doubting; to instruct the ignorant; to call sinners to repentance; to comfort the sorrowing; to forgive injuries; to be patient under suffering; and to pray for the living and the dead.

  4. 問: 什麼是形哀矜?

    Q: What are the corporal works of mercy?

    答: 就是飢者食之,渴者飲之,祼者衣之,收留旅人,照顧病人,探望囚者,埋葬死者。

    A: The corporal works of mercy are: to feed the hungry; to give drink to the thirsty; to clothe the naked; to give shelter to travellers; to attend the sick; to visit those in prison; to bury the dead.

  5. 問: 愛人如己的誡命,也叫我們愛仇人麼?

    Q: Does the commandment to love our neighbour as ourselves bind us also to love our enemies?

    答: 也叫我們真心愛仇人。 (瑪 5:43-48)

    A: Yes, it also binds us sincerely to love our enemies. (Mt 5:43-48)
